"Some battles leave no witnesses.
Some places keep their secrets."
During the opening stages of the Iraq War, two American soldiers are accidentally left behind during a rapid advance. Stranded in Al-Anbar Province with no radio, no extraction, and no way to signal their position, they begin moving through territory that does not appear on any military map.
What they find beneath the desert is not insurgent infrastructure. It is not a weapons cache. It is evidence of something buried here long before the first Mesopotamian empire rose — and long before it fell. The excavations of 2003 did not uncover history. They disturbed something that had been waiting in the dark since before history had a name.
As reality begins to fracture around them — the men realize they are no longer being hunted by insurgents. Something ancient has awakened beneath the shifting sands. And it has been waiting for exactly this kind of invitation.
"Not all curses are born.
Some are summoned."
— Recovered field notes, Al-Anbar Province, April 2003
Al-Anbar Province, 2003. The oldest inhabited land on earth. Civilizations rose and fell here for ten thousand years. Something beneath the sand remembers all of them.
Two soldiers. Left behind. No radio. No extraction. No one coming. The psychological horror of being forgotten by the war that brought you here — and found by something that was already waiting.
Buried beneath the desert long before the first empire rose. The excavations of 2003 did not uncover history. They disturbed something that had been sleeping since before history began.
Reality does not break all at once. It frays. The men begin to question what they see, what they hear, what they remember. The desert does not attack. It unmakes.

"The Hurt Locker meets The Mist.
Isolated. Paranoid. Ancient.
The enemy was never the insurgents."
DESERTED is not a war story with a monster in it. It is a story about what happens when the machinery of modern warfare drops two men into the oldest ground on earth — and something that has been sleeping beneath it for ten thousand years decides they are worth waking up for.
